The beauty dish. Typically a niche modifier reserved for beauty shots, it has a special place in the hearts of all portrait photographers. The purpose of a beauty dish is to sculpt and give emphasis on facial features. The quality of light is harsh so you get strong highlights and shadows. This makes for creative and fun imagery that is typically seen in fashion magazines. Because of its strong nature you really have to plan the entire image. This could include planning the background, hair and makeup.
When using, try to keep it centered on the middle of the face, if you get the 45 degree angle you’re not going get flattering results. Try breaking the rules however and being creative with your shots. The possibilities are endless.
